The takedown ability allows Aiden Pearce to instantly incapacitate any enemy when in close range. Takedowns can kill/knockout anyone depending whether Aiden is armed. If a takedown is performed while Aiden is unarmed, then non-lethal force will be used without killing the person. If Aiden is armed, he will use the currently equipped weapon to kill the person.

Takedowns can be used on police officers without hurting Aiden's reputation if trying to outrun police without killing any cops.
When in stealth, performing a takedown without alerting anyone will reward Aiden with bonus experience. Using takedowns on criminals will increase Aiden's reputation as well.
Enforcers are the only enemy that can not be taken down normally, but this is not a problem once the Enforcer takedown skill is unlocked.
In online invasions, Aiden can takedown the hacker who is invading him, after finding him/her first.

- When performing non-lethal takedowns, Aiden mostly uses his baton rapidly to knock the person down to ground. This maneuver (which is referred as "Police Brutality") is also commonly used by police if excessive force is needed to bring down suspects. Performing takedown on enforcers is also another reference to police brutality.
